On August 21st, 2026, the Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP), in partnership with Gage Park High School, Increase the Peace (ITP), and Communities Partnering 4 Peace (CP4P), hosted an exciting Back to School and Career Pathways Event that brought families, students, community members, and local leaders together for an afternoon of connection, celebration, and preparation for the new school year.
The event created a welcoming and safe space where families could come together, connect with community organizations, learn about valuable resources, and enjoy a day of fun before the start of another school year. With free food, game trucks, and activities for attendees of all ages, the event demonstrated the power of community partnerships to create positive experiences for young people and their families.
A major focus of the event was helping young people see the possibilities available to them beyond high school. Eight panelists representing a variety of career fields shared their personal journeys, experiences, challenges, and lessons learned along the way. Among the panelists was SWOP's own Dantay Williams, who spoke about his own career journey and offered students an opportunity to hear directly from someone who has built a career rooted in community organizing and housing.
The career panel gave students a chance to ask questions and learn that there is no single path to success. By hearing honest stories from professionals with different backgrounds and experiences, students were able to see how education, perseverance, relationships, and taking advantage of opportunities can help shape their futures.
While career exploration was an important part of the day, the event was also about making sure families had what they needed to start the school year strong. More than 100 backpacks filled with school supplies were distributed to students and families, helping ease some of the financial burden that comes with preparing for a new school year.
For SWOP, ITP, CP4P, and Gage Park High School, the event was another example of what can happen when community organizations and institutions come together around the needs and aspirations of local families. By combining resources, relationship-building, career exploration, and plenty of fun, the Back to School and Career Pathways Event helped send students into the new school year feeling supported, connected, and ready for what comes next.
