The Parent Mentor Program’s “Beyond the Classroom” initiative is rooted in the idea that learning and support for children does not stop once the school day ends. Through the initiative, Parent Mentors work to strengthen the connection between schools, families, and the surrounding community by creating opportunities that support students both academically and emotionally. Whether through resource drives, community engagement, or family-centered activities, the initiative encourages parents to take an active role in building a stronger environment for children to grow and succeed.
On April 30th, 2026, Parent Mentors at the Southwest Organizing Project’s (SWOP) member institution, Richard Edwards Dual Language Fine and Performing Arts School, came together to bring joy to students through a community-wide toy donation effort. As part of the Beyond the Classroom initiative, Parent Mentors spent weeks reaching out to small businesses throughout the neighborhood, collecting nearly 500 toy donations to distribute to pre-k, kindergarten, and 1st grade students.
The effort reflected the strong relationships that Parent Mentors continue to build throughout the community. Local businesses stepped forward to support the initiative, helping ensure that hundreds of young students would receive a special gift. It was a reminder that their community cares about them and is invested in their happiness and well-being.
Inside the school, the excitement was immediate as students received their toys with smiles, laughter, and gratitude filling the cafeteria. Parent Mentors helped organize and distribute the donations, creating a welcoming and uplifting atmosphere for both students and staff. The event also highlighted the important role Parent Mentors play within schools, not only as volunteers and advocates, but as trusted leaders who help create meaningful connections between families and the community.
Through initiatives like Beyond the Classroom, Parent Mentors continue to demonstrate how collective community action can make a lasting impact on children and families. By turning a simple act of giving into an opportunity for joy and connection, the Parent Mentors at Richard Edwards Dual Language Fine and Performing Arts School showed the power of community care in action.
