On June 18th, 2026, the Southwest Organizing Project's (SWOP) Communities Partnering 4 Peace (CP4P) team hosted a "Tacos & Ice Cream Social" at Gage Park as part of its ongoing Light in the Night (LIN) initiative. The event brought together residents, families, community partners, and local organizations for an evening of fun, connection, and community building in a safe and welcoming environment.
Light in the Night events are designed to create positive spaces throughout Southwest Chicago where neighbors can come together, build relationships, and strengthen the bonds that make communities safer and more vibrant. Through activities that encourage engagement and interaction, CP4P continues to demonstrate that violence prevention begins with strong connections, trust, and a sense of belonging among residents.
The Tacos & Ice Cream Social offered something for everyone. Families enjoyed free tacos and ice cream while children participated in family-friendly activities and games. Community members had the opportunity to connect with local service providers and organizations that shared information about programs, resources, and opportunities available throughout the neighborhood.
Beyond the food and activities, the event served a larger purpose. By creating spaces where residents can gather, meet their neighbors, and engage with community organizations, CP4P is helping build the collective power needed to address challenges and create lasting positive change. Events like Light in the Night remind residents that public spaces belong to the community and can be places of joy, connection, and support.
As families laughed, shared meals, and enjoyed the summer evening together, the Tacos and Ice Cream Social reflected the spirit of CP4P's work: bringing people together, fostering meaningful relationships, and creating safer, stronger communities.
