Hilda Chavarria-Lopez, born and raised on the south side of Chicago, has always had a strong connection to children and a deep desire to help them. As a mother of two young children, she felt a particular longing to strengthen her bond with her children, especially after feeling disconnected from her first child, whom she had at a young age. Determined to build better connections and play a more active role in their lives, Hilda found herself searching for opportunities to become more involved in her community and her children's education.
Her journey began when the Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP) reached out to her, suggesting she volunteer at Stevenson Elementary School. Hilda had always wanted to volunteer at the school, and this outreach sparked something within her. She began asking questions about how she could get involved, eager to take part in a meaningful way. With the support of Carmen Desantiago and the Parent Mentor coordinator Zuleica, she joined SWOP’s Parent Mentor program. For a year, Hilda dedicated herself to learning from the teachers and students at Stevenson, growing as both a parent and a leader.
After her time as a Parent Mentor, Angelica from SWOP helped Hilda obtain her paraprofessional license, preparing her for the next step in her career. SWOP’s Jobs & Economic Development team also played a key role, with Jonathan Perez and Alfredo Alviar helping her build her resume and sharpen her job-seeking skills. Hilda received her Paraprofessional license in March 2024. Now, in her new role as a paraprofessional, Hilda supports teachers by assisting students with learning disabilities and those who need extra help at Elim Christian Services. She encourages other parents to embrace new opportunities and challenges, reminding them not to be afraid of taking a leap. “Put yourself out there,” Hilda says, “because you never know where you might go.”
