Growing up on the South Side of Chicago, Yulissa Olvera witnessed how structural racism, violence, trauma, and limited access to resources affected individuals and families throughout her community. These experiences shaped her understanding of the barriers many people face and inspired her passion for helping others. Today, as a Case Manager with Communities Partnering 4 Peace (CP4P) at the Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP), Yulissa is putting that passion into practice while working toward her goal of becoming a social worker and continuing to build her skills in case management.
For Yulissa, this work is rooted in both personal experience and a desire to give back to communities that too often face systemic barriers. She believes everyone deserves access to opportunities, the resources they need to thrive, and someone willing to advocate for them when they need support.
At CP4P, Yulissa works directly with individuals and families, helping connect them to resources, services, and opportunities that can improve their quality of life. Whether she is helping someone navigate housing resources, find employment support, access mentorship, or connect with other community-based services, her goal is to help people feel supported and empowered as they work toward long-term stability. Just as important as connecting people to resources is building relationships, listening without judgment, and creating an environment where individuals feel comfortable sharing their needs and working toward their goals.
Yulissa's commitment to this work comes from understanding the challenges that many community members experience firsthand. Growing up in Chicago, she saw how violence, poverty, and limited access to basic resources could affect people's lives. Those experiences showed her the importance of having people and organizations willing to stand alongside communities, especially during difficult times. Through CP4P, she is part of that support system, helping individuals navigate challenges while recognizing their strengths and potential.
Yulissa also understands that the challenges people face are not always the result of individual circumstances or personal choices. Many are connected to larger systemic issues, including poverty, underfunded schools, and unequal access to essential resources. Too often, individuals are expected to overcome these barriers without the support they need. She believes CP4P plays an important role in helping address these gaps by connecting people with services and working to address the underlying challenges that affect community well-being.
For Yulissa, creating meaningful change begins with investing in people. She believes communities need stronger support systems that expand access to housing, education, mental health services, and youth development opportunities. Continued investment in community organizations is equally important, allowing them to provide culturally responsive support that reflects the needs and experiences of the people they serve. By empowering local leaders, creating opportunities, and ensuring residents have a voice in decisions affecting their neighborhoods, communities can build a stronger foundation for everyone to thrive.
When asked what advice she would give to someone interested in pursuing similar work, Yulissa emphasizes the importance of empathy, humility, and a willingness to keep learning. "Building trust requires active listening, genuine care, and an understanding that every person's experiences are different." She stated.
She encourages those entering the field to learn from the communities they serve, seek mentorship from experienced professionals, and recognize that meaningful change takes time. Consistency and compassion, she believes, are among the most valuable tools someone can bring to this work.
Above all, Yulissa wants people to be recognized for their strengths rather than defined by their challenges. Every person has skills, resilience, and experiences that can help them move forward. Sometimes, what they need most is someone willing to listen, help them navigate available resources, and offer guidance along the way.
That belief is what motivates Yulissa in her work at CP4P and fuels her aspirations for the future. Through SWOP, CP4P, and their community partnerships, she hopes to help create more equitable opportunities for individuals and families across the South Side. For Yulissa, supporting a community means seeing the potential in its people, standing beside them through difficult moments, and helping ensure they have the tools and support to build the futures they deserve.
