Housing Leadership Opportunities

At the Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP), the belief that homeownership is a right has guided the work of the Housing Team. Director of Property Reactivation Harry Meyer, alongside Developer Fellows Dantay Williams and Blanca Casillas, have spent months in deep, intentional one-to-one conversations with community members across Chicago’s Southwest Side. These weren’t surface-level interactions, but meaningful dialogues rooted in trust, curiosity, and a shared vision for stability and ownership. Through these conversations, they are identifying commitment, building relationships, and planting the seeds for something much bigger.

That work has now come to fruition in the formation of a cohort of future homeowners—individuals who are not only interested in owning property, but are ready to invest in the journey it takes to get there. This cohort represents the beginning of a leadership pipeline grounded in lived experience and collective aspiration. Each participant brings their own story, challenges, and hopes, but they are united by a common goal: to claim a stake in their communities through homeownership.

To support this journey, SWOP’s Housing Team hosts weekly meetings designed to prepare cohort members for the realities of buying and sustaining a home. These sessions offer practical, honest insight into the housing system, acknowledging its constant ebb and flow. Participants are equipped with knowledge about financial readiness, market conditions, and long-term responsibilities, ensuring they are not only hopeful, but prepared. It’s about setting expectations as much as it is about opening doors.

At its core, this initiative is about building leaders. SWOP understands that sustainable change happens when residents are informed, empowered, and organized. This cohort is being shaped into a group of leaders who will not only navigate their own homeownership journeys, but also influence the future of housing in their neighborhoods.

As SWOP continues its Reclaiming Campaign, rehabbing homes and restoring properties across the Southwest Side, these cohort members will be uniquely positioned to take advantage of new opportunities. Looking ahead, with plans to help develop a new community in the coming years, the groundwork being laid today ensures that those who have put in the time, shown their commitment, and built their knowledge will be ready.

What started as a series of one-to-one conversations has grown into a movement rooted in preparation, powered by community, and driven by the belief that homeownership should be within reach for those willing to work toward it.
