Through the Parent Engagement Institute (PEI), the Ladders of Opportunity initiative was created with a simple but powerful question in mind: how can we better support Parent Mentors in pursuing their dreams? What emerged is a pathway that both lifts up parents and strengthens our schools. As many Parent Mentors discover a passion for education through their service, they begin to envision futures as paraprofessionals, substitute teachers, and beyond. This testimony, and the ones that will follow, highlight the journey of parents who stepped forward, earned their paraprofessional licenses, and are now helping fill critical gaps in our schools while advancing disability justice and supporting the success of all students. This first testimony is the story of Luz Hernandez Toloza.
From Resilience to Hope: My Journey with Ladders of Opportunity
“I am the mother of two beautiful daughters, a proud grandmother of three grandchildren, and I consider my sons-in-law as my own children. My family has always been my greatest motivation to keep growing, contributing positively to society, and demonstrating that it's never too late to pursue new goals.
I come from Venezuela, a country I had to leave due to a very difficult social, economic, and political situation that severely limited opportunities for development and a dignified life. In my country, I worked as a Civil Engineer and university professor, training new generations of engineers and professionals in the environmental field. The lack of resources and adequate conditions for both construction and continuing this educational work—combined with my desire for a better future—led me to emigrate with the hope of rebuilding my life and continuing to serve through education.
Once in my new environment, apprehensive about starting over, I began volunteering in the classroom. I am currently in my second year as a volunteer, an experience that has rekindled my passion for education and my commitment to the community. It was during this process that I learned about the Ladders of Opportunity program, an opportunity that marked a turning point in my life.
Thanks to the guidance of Ms. Ana Villamil and the constant support of Ms. Angélica Ferreira from the SWOP organization, I was able to complete each requirement with confidence. Their dedication, patience, and human support made me feel supported at all times. With the close support of Jonathan (Perez) and Angélica, the process of obtaining my Paraprofessional certification was a journey of learning, personal growth, and professional reaffirmation. I not only received help with paperwork and guidance, but also motivation to believe in my abilities and envision myself once again within the educational field.
Today, I am proud to have achieved this goal. This accomplishment represents for me a story of overcoming adversity, resilience, and hope. Ladders of Opportunity not only provided me with professional tools but also strengthened my confidence and allowed me to transform my previous experience into new opportunities to serve.
I am currently seeking a job opportunity in a school, hoping to continue supporting—ideally at Louis Pasteur Elementary—or at any institution where I can contribute my dedication to service and educational experience. My commitment is to support students with dedication and empathy, especially those who need role models of perseverance and hope.
The impact of this program transcends my personal story. Ladders of Opportunity creates real opportunities for community members—especially those of us from challenging backgrounds—to integrate into the education system, strengthening our schools and contributing to the development of new generations. I firmly believe in education as a tool for social transformation and in the power of community to create opportunities.
I am eternally grateful to the program, to Jonathan, Angelica, and the entire organization for believing in me and investing in my development. This experience has transformed my life and inspires me to move forward with commitment, gratitude, and a deep desire to serve.”
“When doors to education open, not only one life is transformed, but an entire community.”
