On July 16th, 2026, the Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP) welcomed Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson to the office of its Community Violence Intervention team, Communities Partnering 4 Peace (CP4P), for a meaningful conversation about the work being done every day to create safer neighborhoods across Chicago's Southwest Side.

The visit gave Mayor Johnson the opportunity to hear directly from SWOP-CP4P staff about their day-to-day efforts to build relationships, interrupt cycles of violence, and create pathways to opportunity for community members. More than just discussing programs, the conversation centered on the philosophy that has guided the organization's work for years: lasting public safety is built through trust, consistency, and genuine relationships.

The meeting came at an important time as conversations continue throughout the city about community violence intervention organizations and ensuring accountability within the field. SWOP-CP4P welcomed the opportunity to showcase the work taking place on the ground and demonstrated that effective violence prevention requires dedicated outreach workers, strong community partnerships, and an unwavering commitment to the neighborhoods they serve.

Every day, SWOP-CP4P staff meet community members where they are—connecting participants to critical resources, mentoring young people, supporting families through initiatives like the diaper distribution program, hosting Light in the Night events that reclaim public spaces, and providing opportunities that foster hope and stability. These efforts extend far beyond responding to violence; they are about building stronger communities where residents feel supported, connected, and empowered.

Throughout the discussion, staff shared how these initiatives work together to address the root causes of violence while creating positive alternatives for youth and families. While no single program is responsible for these improvements, SWOP-CP4P has remained steadfast in its mission to promote peace, strengthen neighborhoods, and invest in the people who call these communities home.
