Parent Mentors Celebrate Earning Paraprofessional Licenses

On June 9th, 2026, the Southwest Organizing Project's (SWOP) Parent Mentor Program gathered to celebrate a remarkable achievement as participants in the Ladders of Opportunity initiative were recognized for earning their paraprofessional licenses. Surrounded by fellow Parent Mentors and program leaders, participants received certificates acknowledging the hard work, perseverance, and commitment that brought them to this important milestone.

The celebration served as an opportunity to reflect on each participant’s journey. Many of the newly licensed paraprofessionals balanced family responsibilities, work, and personal challenges while dedicating themselves to advancing their education and careers. Their accomplishments represent both professional growth and a deep commitment to serving students and strengthening their communities.

SWOP Parent Mentor Program Director Adriana Velazquez spoke about the determination it took to go through this process and the pride she felt seeing participants reach their goals. She highlighted how everyone chose to invest in themselves and their futures, even when the path forward was not always easy.

Another piece to the celebration was recognizing the support system that helped participants succeed. Throughout the program, Angelica Ferreira and Jonathan Perez worked closely with participants, providing one-on-one support, tutoring sessions, workforce guidance, and encouragement every step of the way. Their efforts helped participants identify their goals, overcome obstacles, and stay focused on their aspirations.

One Parent Mentor shared what the experience meant to them:

"Earning my paraprofessional license is something I once thought was out of reach, but today I can proudly say that I did it. This journey challenged me in so many ways, but I never felt alone. Angelica and Jonathan believed in me even when I doubted myself. They helped me discover what I truly wanted for my future and encouraged me to keep pushing forward. From tutoring sessions to workforce support, they were there every step of the way. I am incredibly grateful for their guidance, patience, and dedication because they helped me see what I was capable of achieving."

The event served as a powerful reminder of the impact that investment, mentorship, and opportunity can have on a person's life. The accomplishments represent not an ending, but

the beginning of new career pathways and opportunities for these Parent Mentors as they continue making a difference in schools and communities across Chicago.
