On July 18th and July 25th, the Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP), in partnership with Huntington Bank, hosted two three-hour Homebuyer Education Workshops in Spanish, equipping community members with the knowledge and confidence to begin their journey toward homeownership.
For many aspiring homeowners, buying a home can feel overwhelming. From understanding mortgages and credit requirements to navigating closing costs and financing options, the process is often filled with unfamiliar terminology and uncertainty. These workshops were designed to remove those barriers by providing participants with a clear, step-by-step walkthrough of the homebuying process led by experienced housing professionals.
Throughout the two sessions, attendees learned what to expect at each stage of purchasing a home while having the opportunity to ask the questions that mattered most to them. The interactive format created a welcoming environment where participants could receive honest answers, gain practical knowledge, and better understand what it takes to become a homeowner.
The learning continued beyond the classroom. Participants were also offered a free one-on-one consultation with a Home Purchase Advisor, providing personalized guidance based on their individual financial situation. During these consultations, advisors reviewed participants' expenses, credit history, and assets to help determine whether they were ready to purchase a home or identify the steps they could take to prepare for homeownership in the future.
Those who completed both educational sessions and the individual consultation became eligible to receive a homebuyer certificate, recognizing their commitment to learning and preparing for one of the most significant investments they may ever make.
For SWOP, these workshops are about empowering residents with the tools to make informed decisions that strengthen families and neighborhoods alike.
When asked why these workshops are such an important resource for community members, Blanca Casillas, Diverse Developer Fellow with SWOP, emphasized the importance of making homeownership feel attainable.
"The housing market is changing drastically every day, and from the outside it only looks that much harder to know if you can own a home. People want to be able to invest in themselves, their families, and their community, and we want everyone to feel like they can make that decision responsibly. So, we want to be able to provide that knowledge base, and meet people where they are, because that's what our community deserves."
Following the success of the Spanish-language workshops, SWOP's Housing Team will continue expanding access to homebuyer education by hosting two English-language Homebuyer Education Workshops in August, ensuring even more residents have the opportunity to gain the knowledge and support needed to take the next step toward homeownership.
