SWOP Parent Mentors Prepare to Return to School for Fall Semester

As the new school year gets underway, Parent Mentors across the Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP) network are preparing to return to classrooms and schools for another semester of supporting students, teachers, and families. Through the Parent Mentor Program (PMP), parents and caregivers are given an opportunity to become active partners in their children’s education while gaining valuable experience, building relationships, and strengthening their connection to their school communities.

The Parent Mentor Program brings parents into schools to work alongside educators and provide additional support to students. Parent Mentors can assist teachers with classroom activities, work directly with students, help create a welcoming learning environment, and provide the additional hands and attention that can make a meaningful difference during the school day. At the same time, their presence creates a stronger connection between families and schools, helping parents become more informed and involved in their children’s education.

For students, having an additional caring adult in the classroom can provide another source of encouragement, attention, and support. Teachers benefit from having Parent Mentors working alongside them, allowing them to provide more individualized attention to students while building stronger relationships with the families they serve. For parents, the program creates a pathway to become more engaged in their children’s education while developing new skills and gaining firsthand experience within a school setting.

Before Parent Mentors head back into schools, training provides an important opportunity to prepare them for the semester ahead. These sessions offer practical assistance by helping Parent Mentors understand their responsibilities, navigate the school environment, communicate effectively with educators, and develop strategies for working with students. The trainings are designed to give Parent Mentors the tools and confidence they need to step into their roles and make an impact from the beginning of the school year.

Just as importantly, the trainings provide emotional support. Returning to a school environment can bring excitement, challenges, and uncertainty, and Parent Mentors benefit from having a space where they can ask questions, share their experiences, and learn from one another. Training creates a sense of community among Parent Mentors, reminding them that they are not entering their schools alone but are part of a larger network of parents working toward stronger schools and stronger communities.

As Parent Mentors prepare to return to classrooms this fall, their involvement represents an important investment in students, educators, and families. By bringing parents into the heart of the school community, the Parent Mentor Program helps create stronger partnerships between home and school while giving parents the opportunity to play an active role in shaping the educational experiences of their children and their communities.
