SWOP Welcomes Dawes Elementary School to the Parent Mentor Program

The Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP) is excited to welcome Charles Gates Dawes Elementary School located at 3810 W. 81st Pl. as its newest member institution and partner in the Parent Mentor Program. This new partnership represents the continuing work to strengthen relationships within local schools, support families, and build leadership among the parents and community members who play an important role in student success.

During the week of October 12th, Parent Mentors, Parent Mentor Organizers, and Parent Mentor Coordinators came together for a week of training, relationship-building, and goal setting to prepare for this new chapter at DAWES. The training introduced participants to SWOP, its mission, and its approach to community organizing, while helping Parent Mentors understand the importance of building meaningful relationships with the teachers, parents, principals, and students they will work alongside throughout the school year.

At the heart of SWOP's work is the belief that strong relationships are the foundation for lasting community change. Through the Parent Mentor Program, parents will become active partners in their children's education, develop leadership skills, and create stronger connections between families and schools. The training week provided space for participants to learn from one another, establish shared goals, and begin building the trust necessary to make those relationships meaningful.

Becoming a member institution of SWOP means joining a network of schools, congregations, community organizations, and other institutions committed to working together to address shared challenges and build power across the Southwest Side of Chicago. Through this partnership, DAWES joins a broader community that believes the people closest to an issue should have a meaningful role in shaping its solutions. The Parent Mentor Program puts that philosophy into practice by creating opportunities for parents to contribute their experiences, develop their voices, and work alongside educators to support their school communities.

As the Parent Mentor Program begins this new journey at DAWES, SWOP looks forward to the relationships, leadership, and possibilities that will grow from this partnership. With a foundation of shared learning, collaboration, and community, Parent Mentors are ready to take their next steps toward making a meaningful difference in the lives of students, families, and the entire DAWES school community.
