The Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP) is steadfast in its mission to provide safe, welcoming spaces where young people can gather, connect, and thrive in a supportive environment. These spaces are intentionally designed to not only offer moments of joy and relaxation but also to empower youth by fostering community and encouraging their voices to be heard. Through initiatives like bi-weekly Youth Kickbacks and open gyms, SWOP continues to create meaningful opportunities for engagement while addressing the needs and aspirations of young people across Southwest Chicago.
Every other Friday from 5 PM to 8 PM, SWOP’s office transforms into a hub of creativity and connection during the Youth Kickbacks. With free food, engaging activities like soap making, card games, and more, the Kickbacks offer a laid-back yet purposeful space for youth to enjoy themselves. Beyond the fun, SWOP organizers actively participate in these gatherings, listening to the attendees' ideas and collaborating on ways to expand and enhance programming. These conversations ensure that the activities remain relevant and resonate with the interests and needs of the young participants, empowering them to take an active role in shaping their community experiences.
In partnership with SWOP’s Community Violence Intervention team, Communities Partnering 4 Peace (CP4P), the open gyms bring even more opportunities for connection and recreation. Held every Tuesday from 6 PM to 8:30 PM and Saturday from 1 PM to 4 PM, these events offer a vibrant space for youth and community members of all ages to come together. With free food, music, and an open gym atmosphere, participants engage in fun physical activities and build relationships in a safe, positive setting. These open gyms underscore SWOP's commitment to fostering environments where young people can feel supported and celebrated while steering clear of potentially harmful situations.
These programs are scheduled to continue through the winter season, allowing youth year-round experiences to engage in.
