Youth Election Dialogue

On August 20th, the Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP) and GoodKids MadCity Englewood (GKMC-E) came together to host a Youth Voting Dialogue, aimed at empowering young people to engage in the voting process. As two 501(c)(3) organizations, both SWOP and GKMC-E remain nonpartisan and do not endorse political candidates. However, they are deeply committed to ensuring that communities, especially young people, are well-informed about the voting process and the issues on the ballot. The dialogue created an open and informative space for young people to learn about their civic responsibilities and the impact their votes and voices can have on shaping the future of their neighborhoods.

During the meeting, attendees participated in a training session that explored the critical role Black and Brown youth have played throughout history in the voting process. The session highlighted significant moments when young people organized and drove change, demonstrating the power they hold in advocating for their communities. Through these examples, the youth were shown that by building relationships and exerting pressure on elected officials, they can influence policies and decisions that directly affect their lives. The training also underscored how youth movements have historically pushed for social justice, from civil rights to environmental activism, inspiring participants to see voting as a powerful tool for continued progress.

The collaboration between SWOP and GKMC-E reflects their shared commitment to fostering civic engagement among young people in Chicago. By offering educational opportunities like the Youth Voting Dialogue, they hope to inspire the next generation of leaders to act, not just through voting but through continued community organizing. As both organizations work to uplift the voices of Black and Brown young people, they aim to ensure that the youth are not only equipped with knowledge but also feel empowered to be active participants in the democratic process, making positive changes for their communities.
