On September 26th, 2024, the Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP) partnered with TGI Movement and Chicago Cares to host a comprehensive Work Readiness Interview Prep session. The session was designed to empower young people with the skills necessary to secure future job opportunities. The event, led by Shelby Chaney from Chicago Cares, brought together a large group of volunteers, organizers, and youth participants for an intensive day of mock interviews, feedback sessions, and career-building exercises. Held at SWOP’s office, the training was aimed at equipping the youth with the confidence and expertise to excel in real-world job interviews.
Participants, ranging in age from 15 to 17, engaged enthusiastically in the mock interviews, which were structured to simulate a variety of job scenarios. Each young person had the opportunity to sit down with multiple volunteers, who acted as potential employers, asking common interview questions and providing constructive feedback. This hands-on experience allowed the youth to practice their responses, refine their body language, and learn how to effectively communicate their strengths. The atmosphere was both supportive and educational, with participants openly discussing their concerns and asking questions to better understand the interview process.
In addition to the mock interviews, the event featured a resume-building workshop where participants received guidance on how to craft strong resumes that highlight their skills and experiences. Volunteers worked closely with the youth, helping them to identify their unique talents and market themselves effectively to potential employers. By the end of the day, participants left with a newfound confidence and polished resumes, better prepared to take on the challenges of job hunting and eager to pursue future prospects in the workforce.
